  1. A seed is the reproductive structure of 
  2. higher plants (angiosperms and gymnosperms). 
  3. It develops from a fertilized ovule and 
  4. consists of an embryo and a food store, 
  5. surrounded and protected by an outer seed 
  6. coat, called the testa. The food store is 
  7. contained either in a specialized nutritive 
  8. tissue, the endosperm, or in the cotyledons 
  9. of the embryo itself.
